Known as the portal to the peace, the small community of Valleyview is located 350km north of the capital Edmonton and just 115 km east of the city of Grande Prairie. Valleyview is home to an important crossroads that can lead the traveler to either Canada’s northern adventure via Highway 49 and the Mackenzie Highway or West towards the Alaska Highway. These highways provide perfect access to to places such as the Northwest Territories or if you head West to Dawson Creek, northeastern British Columbia, the Yukon, and of course Alaska.
With a population of around 2000 people Valleyview has seen a quite a change since it became a town.
First discovered in the late 1800’s, the first visitors discovered and established the area to exchange goods for furs. With the trading becoming very successful the Hudson’s Bay company established a post on Sturgeon Lake. In 1900 the area was surveyed for a possible settlement but little would be developed until 1916 when the first pioneers settled in the nearby area due to the richness of soil for farming. By 1929 Valleyview would see it’s first post office opened within the community.
With a trading area of approximately 5000 and a population of just under 2000 Valleyview continues to prosper thanks in large part to agriculture and the oil and gas industry.

The biggest recreational attraction is found at the local arena which is named the Polar Palace. The arena was once home to the Valleyview Jets, a senior hockey team that last competed in the North Peace Hockey League. Today, the Jets live in through minor hockey clubs that play throughout the winter at the rink. Located next door is the curling rink, which has regular bonspiels throughout the season, and the local swimming pool. All three facilities sit on the same grounds and on a beautiful day in the Peace you can enjoy the Legion picnic area and water park.
Nearby Sturgeon Lake provides a great setting for outdoor activities in the spring, summer, and fall months. Two provincial parks are situated on the shores of Sturgeon, Young’s Point Provincial Park and Williamson Provincial park. Inside both parks you can enjoy beaches, boating, and fishing.
